A collection of any kind should always be well protected. After dedicating time, effort and often money into something that you love, to neglect its safety could be a future disaster waiting to happen. You never can know for certain when something could go wrong. Everything from water to theft is a possible risk to your hard earned collections. Take the necessary precautions to reduce or eliminate these risks completely.

Though it takes a fair amount of time to build up a decent collection, it’s ultimately up to you to determine what it is worth to you personally. If you know that protecting the items you’ve collected as a hobby is a priority, there are many aspects that should not go overlooked. Fire is an unfortunate threat to your collectibles. Keeping extremely rare or valuable pieces in a fire resistant storage container of some kind is recommended. These containers come in a variety of sizes and price ranges and can be found at most department stores.

Making copies of all legal documents is also in your best interest. Everything from the sales receipt to documents of authenticity should be copied and kept together somewhere safe. Adding them to the items in your fire resistant storage certainly can’t hurt.

Collectibles of any kind are rarely meant to be displayed in direct sunlight. Maintaining a safe temperature for your collection is necessary. Extreme heat tends to be the worst. Quite often professionals will recommend that items be stored at cooler temperatures in a darker setting. Avoid direct light as a precaution.

If thievery is among your concerns, place collectibles in a locking display case. Having additional home security such as an alarm is also a good idea. An alarm system that instantly alerts police to your home is much better than one that does not. Keep valuables away from windows to prevent them from being noticed by the wrong person.

Some people may not pause to consider that chances of having some form of flooding in the home far outweigh the risk of fire. Whether its extreme weather or any appliance hooked up to a water line, the possibility is real. Keep your collection up high enough to avoid water if it should rise a few feet in the home. Water damage is very hard to fix and often leads to bacteria and mould growth.

It might sound silly to take out insurance on a collection but the numbers can add up. After putting so much into something, it only makes sense that you would want some kind of insurance. It’s no different than your home or car. Investments must be protected. There may come a day when you discover it was worth it. Don’t be too quick to dismiss insurance.

Like anything, collectibles should be properly cleansed and maintained. Give them a dusting or a wash if the material permits it. Everyday care should be part of something that you wish to grow in value. Protecting your collection is a vital part of the collecting hobby itself.
